Mission Statement: A.skate - Autism. Skating with Kids through Acceptance, Therapy, and Education
Why not the multi colored puzzle piece? We do not follow the trend... and we created our own!
The A Skate Foundation is constantly searching for clues and cues to answers in the complex structure of Autism. In the complex structure of the universe we use symbolism and association to do everything from teaching, navigation, contemplation, worship, and even branding. These are methods to think, steer, and connect. It is communing with the familiar to potentially open doors to the unfamiliar.
We have chosen the image of the moth for our talisman. Traditional traits given to the moth are INTUITION, HEIGHTENED AWARENESS, PSYCHIC PERCEPTION, KNOWLEDGE OF OTHERWORLD, SECOND SIGHT, INFLUENCE, CLARITY, VULNERABILITY, PERSISTENCE, DETERMINATION, CONCEALMENT, and FAITH. The skulls become images of the brevity and sacrament of life; the urgency to connect those dots for answers. These traits are easily be attributed to the struggle of Autism.
In the sometimes hard to understand world of a person facing Autism there lies that mysterious list of traits and above all FAITH and DETERMINATION to rise above their situation.
We thank you for your support and hope that you move beyond awareness to ACTION. Artist - Amos Oaks

The long wait is over! The Vans x Askate shoe collaboration is now available in Vans stores, skate shops, and at Vans.com!! Read a few FAQ's about our collaboration and why it is what it is...
Why Autism, Why Skateboarding, Why change the Era Pro to be Laceless? Skateboarding offers nearly every component of Occupational Therapy, a type of therapy that persons with autism typically need from the time they are babies through adulthood and sometimes the rest of their lives. Skateboarding offers this type of relief in a social and real life setting instead of behind 4 walls with a therapist. It's funny how my 11 year old with autism can Back Disaster an 8 foot quarter pipe but his motor skills with his fingers won't let him tie his shoes. The Askate x Vans collab has been in the works for almost 3 years. We wanted to accommodate persons with autism through our collaboration but also design a shoe that the common skateboarder would WANT to wear bringing the birth of the first ever Vans Era Pro Laceless!! Now when you bust your shoe strings skateboarding, your shoe will stay on, and for those who can't tie their shoes, you have an even better "slip on" Shoes are now shipping to skate shops and Vans stores everywhere! Askate is a 100% volunteer organization and we rely on supporters of all walks of life to keep moving forward! Thank you everyone for the support! 2014 is going to be great! More FAQ's below:
Why does the Askate shoe only come in adult sizes, I want to buy a pair for my kids to support Askate's cause?! A shoe collaboration doesn't mean that the shoe will be available in all sizes. A kids shoe would be a completely different collaboration than an adult skate shoe. This is our very first opportunity for a collaboration of this magnitude and are so honored to have had the opportunity to make this shoe exactly what we wanted it to be! We wanted to dive in head first instead of dip our big toe in, we wanted to make a mark and be remembered. Choosing the adult shoe collab instead of kids shoe collab makes absolutely perfect sense. Yes we want to accommodate and bring awareness to autism for all walks of life but Vans already does that with their 20+ options for kids slip on style shoes. What about the big kids? What about your every day skateboarder who just wants to support? That's what we have collaborated with Vans on to offer the first ever Era Laceless Pro! If your 11 year old isn't in an adult size 7 yet like mine is, get a pair and save it for them! Put it in the top closet until they will fit! As "our" kids get older they need more options to wear and skate in than just another slip on, Era Laceless Pro is that option.
Obsessed to Skate, what's that? It's exactly what it sounds like... Remember the old Suicidal Tendencies song "Seemed like such an innocent toy, Got a skate at eight years old, He was the All-American boy, Now the story can be told, Beware he's possessed to skate!" - In real life many kids with autism become fixated on things creating real and severe obsessive compulsive disorder to that "thing". Some kids are obsessed with trains, others with architecture, Presidents, numbers, letter/number coding on dollar bills... Kids that attend Askate events become "Obsessed to Skate". A very talented & well respected artist, our friend Jay Croft drew up a new graphic for Askate to bring awareness that obsessions can sometimes be a good thing especially if you channel that obsession to be a healthy one! The graphic became the insole of the most important collaboration that Askate will ever accomplish! Say hello to the Vans Era Laceless Pro In stores now for Spring 14'!
